Professor Dimitris A. Saravanos
Structural Mechanics and Smart Materials Group,
Dr. Saravanos is a Professor at the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics of the University of Patras (1999-date), where he teaches the courses in the areas of Finite Element Analysis, Structural Analysis, Structural Dynamics, Composite Mechanics and Introduction to Computer Science. He has established and heads the research group of Structural Mechanics and Smart Materials.
Prior to joining the University of Patras, he worked for 10 years (1988-1999) as a Researcher in the Structural Mechanics and Structural Dynamics Branches of the Structures Division at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University (1988), a Masters in Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens.
His research activities has been focused in the areas of structural mechanics, structural dynamics, smart materials, composite materials and structures, SHM, adaptive and morphing structures with emphasis on applications for aeronautics and wind turbine rotors. He has established the Research Lab of Structural Mechanics and Smart Materials. He is the author of over 200 technical papers and among the top 100 most cited scientists/engineers worldwide in the field of Aerospace & Aeronautics. He has received research support from EU (frameworks 5, 6 and 7, Horizon2020), national programs, and from NASA and EOARD/AFOSR for projects in the fields of aeronautics/aerospace and wind energy.
He is Senior Editor of the Journal of Vibration & Control, Associate Editor of Wind Energy and of the Journal of Aerospace Science and Technology. He is Fellow of ASME and Associate Fellow of AIAA, member of the ASME Adaptive Structures and Materials Systems (ASMS) Branch, of AIAA Adaptive Structures Committee, and member of the scientific committees of the International Conference of Adaptive Structures Technologies (ICAST) and the European Workshop of SHM (EWSHM).
Dr. Saravanos was the advisor of the best European Ph.D in Wind Energy (2012) awarded by the European Wind Energy Academy, and recipient of team Achievement Awards (1990, 1993, 1995, 2001) and Space Act Award (2000) at NASA Glenn Research Center. Dr. Saravanos is a Professor at the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics of the University of Patras.
